Albany County Cultural Resources

Albany County is home to local and state repositories of cultural and historical artifacts such as the American Heritage Center, Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections Library, the Laramie Plains Museum, the Laramie Historic Railroad Depot, and the Wyoming Territorial Prison.

Laramie Plains Museum

The Laramie Plains Museum is an historic house museum complex of the City of Laramie, Wyoming, and the surrounding area, whose mission is to preserve, restore, augment and exhibit it historic buildings, grounds andthe historic collections contained therein, thereby increasing public appreciation and education about the nature of the human heritage of the area through guided tours, exhibitions, publications and special events.

The American Heritage Center

Located in the Centennial Complex, east of the main University of Wyoming campus, the American Hertiage Center shares a space with the University of Wyoming Art Museum and the Toppan Rare Books Library. AHC collections go beyond Wyoming's or the region's borders and support a wide range of research and teaching activities in the humanities, sciences, arts, business, and education. Total manuscripts and archives holdings are roughly 75,000 cubic feet (or nearly 15 miles) of material.

Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections

Located in the William Robertson Coe Library on the University of Wyoming campus, the library is home to Grace Raymond Hebard Collection which contains the largest collection of works (books and maps) on and about Wyoming. The special collections library is also home to Howard Hays Library, the William Robertson Coe Library, the Canoso Miniature Book Collection, and so much more.

Laramie Historic Railroad Depot

The Depot is the only remaining building left from the once large Union Pacific presence in Laramie and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The railroad is the reason for the City’s original existence, and the Depot is an important part of Laramie’s historic legacy.

Wyoming Territorial Prison

Elnora Frye is THE leading expert on all things that pertain to the Territorial Penitentiary. You can see her brief history of the institution that she recently shared with us below. Elnora served on the board of the Albany County Historical Society for over 30 years and her book, Atlas of Wyoming Outlaws at the Territorial Penitentiary gives the history of all the inmates at the penitentiary. It is available on Amazon.

Nici Self Museum

Operated by the Centennial Valley Historical Association and a corps of dedicated volunteers, it was organized in the early 1970s as part of a community effort to be recognized as a Bicentennial community. Exhibits celebrate the mining, ranching, and railroading history of the area. Several buildings from around the area have been moved to the grounds and are open to visitors.

Wyoming Newspaper Project

Get in touch with Wyoming’s past through historical and archived Wyoming Newspapers. Historians, genealogists, students, and scholars will find a wealth of reliable information here, all first-hand accounts of local news from days gone by. Our earliest archive dates back to 1849 but many of these papers survived for only a brief time and disappeared like the boom-and-bust ghost towns of Wyoming and the west.
