GREENHILL CEMETERY WALKING TOUR

Judy Knight has organized another of her popular annual cemetery walking tours. Potter’s Field burials, located in the northwest portion of the cemetery, will be the focus this year.

SPEAKERS: Kim Viner and Lena (Sunada-Matsumura) Newlin and Scott Hunter. Kim will talk about the unfortunate drowning of teenager Bennie Burton in 1900 and the equally unfortunate 1904 death by lynching of prison inmate Joe Martin. Lena will talk about her research on the burial of several Japanese men who were working in Wyoming at the time of their deaths. And Scott Hunter, City of Laramie Parks Director, will talk about the challenge he has taken on to figure out where exactly all of the burials are in Potter’s Field.

DIRECTIONS: Enter Laramie’s Greenhill Cemetery from the north, at 15th St. and Bradley (maintenance entrance or north entrance), go straight ahead and then turn left at the end of the road, park anywhere along there (slightly into grass is OK), and meet where the flag marker is, at the east edge of Potter’s Field,  where Bennie Burton’s monument is on your right.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. No reservations required. Mosquito repellent is suggested.

Sponsored by the Laramie Plains Museum and the Albany County Historical Society.
